Waiting too late to plan. If we can get somebody to plan early, we can usually protect more assets than if we’re in a crisis situation. Planning early is important. The other mistakes that I tend to see is that families give away assets. They’ll put family members on real property title or they think I can give money away because there’s some IRS rule that says I can do it. Those don’t necessarily work in the Medicaid context. Again, planning early and seeing an elder law attorney to make sure that you’re planning correctly.
